Oregon State is one of two universities in the Pacific Northwest to develop basic-, intermediate-, and advanced-level coursework in geographic information science (particularly GIS, cartography, remote sensing, and surveying).
Portland State University offers a diverse program in Spatial Analysis and GIS. Preliminary Study, a core GIS Sequence, classes in GI Science, and Seminars and Colloquia are offered. The University of Oregon offers a diverse program in Geographic Information Science that addresses the fundamental issues surrounding the use of digital technology to handle geographic information, that is, namely, information about places, activities, and phenomena on and near the surface of the Earth that is commonly stored on maps or in images.
COCC is a nationally recognized leader in Community College GIS education. The GIS program is designed to prepare students for employment as technicians as well as to provide a theoretical basis for understanding the use of GIS and its place in analysis and decision making. Course work is based on the mapping capabilities of AutoCAD and the GIS capabilities of ARC/INFO, ArcCAD and ArcView; plus work in Surveying, Natural Resources, Geography, computer skills, math, and communication.
