Avenue Scripts

Avenue scripts are a series of commands and functions that are used for several different reasons. You can use scripts to automate repetitive tasks to speed up processing, or to combine several tasks into one step. There are also certain ArcView functions that can only be exploited through a script.

Nearly all the buttons you press, menu items you select and tools you use are driven by scripts. You can actually access and edit all the scripts that drive ArcView and customize them to meet your specific needs. The kind folks at ESRI have also bundled with the software 110+ sample scripts that perform many other functions.

I have found several scripts that I use on a regular basis in the Samples directory.
Hundreds of user created scripts are available on the Internet. ESRI's ArcScripts Page is a good place to start, but that is not the only place to look. With a little searching, one can find some great resources.

There are many tools and sites available on the internet for viewing and download, to help you learn about Avenue script writing. One such tool is the E.S.R.I. Sample Scripts Information Page. This is a great tool that describes all sample scripts that come with ArcView 3.0. Several additional scripts came with AV 3.1.

Several Extensions exist that combine the useful features found in the samples into very handy packages.
